Maggie moved to the east coast in 2006. Although she has drawn and
painted all of her life, she started painting and marketing her work
full time in 1997 when she opened Maggie’s Studio back in Indiana.
Prior to that, she did graphic design, providing camera-ready artwork
for printers and advertisers. Her skills as an illustrator were also
evident in her following as a home and business portraiture artist.
Eventually, however, the lack of color in her work led her to
concentrate more fully on painting and developing a warm palette of
color and resulting in her large body of work. In addition to
originals, Maggie has over 25 images available as giclee prints.
As for subject matter, she likes to paint recognizable images, she says. "Although there may come a time in my career to experiment with more abstract forms, I like to paint images of things and places that people know. They see what I see and then they add their own story, their own memory, of that particular image. When they share these stories and memories with me, that’s the connection between artist and buyer that I’m looking for. That’s what makes it work for me."
Commission work is also an important component in Maggie’s work.
"I find the commission experience to be very satisfying. Often a client has vision, sometimes a photograph or two, and simply doesn’t have the knowledge or skill to put it into an artistic form. But it doesn’t mean they can’t see it. They simply need a translator, someone who is able to get their vision on canvas. And that’s where I come in."
Maggie has already developed a strong following in New York. She became a member of the National Art Club in New York City in 2009, having been sponsored by Will Barnet, a well-know printer maker, who encouraged her to join to expand the range of exposure for her work. Collectors have purchased directly from her studio for the last five years as well as through various shows in the area.
